In recent social media news, Instagram head Adam Mosseri took to stories to answer questions about the social media giants plans to bring back Instagram chronological feeds, which many of us have missed for a long time now. During his appearance at a Senate hearing, he confirmed that chronological feeds are returning to Instagram. During a Q&A, Adam said that Instagram is trialling two alternative versions of the feature, with the starting quarter of 2022 as the planned release window. One version of chronological feeds would enable users to pick their favourites that will show up at the top of their Instagram feed in chronological order. The other version would let users see posts from everyone they follow in chronological order. However, Adam didn’t explain how the recommended posts feature will be affected by Instagram chronological feeds. Adam has made it clear that Instagram has no intentions of ditching their algorithmic feed for a previous version that’s in working order. He has also stated that it would be a comparable feature to Twitter, where you can choose your prefered version. Why Were Instagram Chronological Feeds Ditched? Instagram claimed that switching away from chronological feeds would improve user experience. There are currently three different algorithm signals that pull relevant content to the top of your newsfeed; these are Interest, Relationship and timeliness based. Technological advances have enabled Instagram to bring back chronological feeds whilst maintaining the algorithms designed to bring you relevant content, which is news many of us wanted to hear!
